Beyond Back Pain: Headaches, Neuropathy, and Sciatica

Why the spine and nervous system may be part of the story, even when the pain isn't in your back

By Dr. Dan Yachter D.C. | Elevation Health Chiropractic – Lake Mary, FL

When people think "chiropractor," they think "back pain."

And yes, back pain is a big part of what we see.

But after nearly three decades in practice, I can tell you this: some of the most frustrating problems patients bring through our door aren't in the back at all.

The headache that shows up every afternoon.

The tingling or numbness in the hands or feet.

The pain that shoots from the low back down the leg.

Patients often assume those are three unrelated problems. Sometimes they are. But very often, there's a common thread worth investigating:

The spine and the nervous system.

Let's talk about it.

Your Spine Protects Your Nervous System

Your spine isn't just a stack of bones. It's the framework that surrounds and protects your spinal cord, and the nerves that branch out from it travel to your head, arms, hands, legs and feet.

Those nerves, along with the joints, muscles and connective tissues around them, work together as one integrated neuromusculoskeletal system.

So when spinal alignment and mechanics change, the problem may not stay local. Loads change. Stress patterns change. Muscles tighten and compensate. Nerves can become irritated.

And the symptom you feel may show up far from the place where the problem started.

That's why at Elevation Health we don't just ask, "Where does it hurt?"

We ask, "Why isn't this system functioning the way it was designed to function?"

Headaches: When the Problem Starts Below the Skull

A bad headache doesn't just hurt. It cancels plans, dims the lights and steals hours you can't get back.

And a surprising number of headaches start in the neck.

The joints, muscles and nerves of the upper neck are closely tied to how your head feels. When that area is under constant strain, think long hours hunched over a phone or laptop, it can refer pain upward.

Three types of headaches we commonly see:

  • Tension headaches: the tight band of pressure around the head, often tied to tension in the neck and shoulders.

  • Cervicogenic headaches: pain that actually originates in the neck and refers into the head, commonly linked to spinal mechanics and posture.

  • Migraines: these can have many triggers, but for many people neck tension and spinal stress are part of the picture.

If you're reaching for another pill every week, it may be time to ask a different question: what is triggering this?

Neuropathy and Nerve Symptoms: Numbness, Tingling and Burning

Numbness. Tingling. Burning. "Pins and needles." Weakness or clumsiness in the hands or feet.

These symptoms deserve attention, and they deserve an accurate explanation.

Here's the honest truth: nerve symptoms can have many different causes. Some are related to the spine and the way nerves are being irritated or stressed. Others are related to things like blood sugar problems, nutritional deficiencies, medications or other medical conditions.

That's why a proper evaluation matters so much.

When the cause involves spinal mechanics, posture or irritation along the nerve pathway, our focus is on improving the function of the neck, spine and surrounding structures to help reduce stress on irritated nerves and tissues. We take the same approach with symptoms like carpal tunnel, where the wrist, arm, shoulder, neck and spine all matter.

And when something needs additional testing or care from another healthcare professional?

We'll tell you, and we'll refer you.

Knowing when chiropractic is appropriate, and when it isn't the whole answer, is part of taking care of people responsibly.

Sciatica: A Symptom, Not a Diagnosis

If you've ever had sciatica, you know it.

Pain, burning or tingling that travels from the low back or buttock down the leg. Sometimes it's sharp. Sometimes it's a deep ache. Sometimes it makes sitting, standing or sleeping miserable.

But here's what most people don't realize:

Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

It tells us the sciatic nerve is being irritated or compressed. It doesn't tell us why.

The cause might involve:

  • A disc problem in the lower spine

  • Joint dysfunction in the low back or pelvis

  • Muscle tension and compensation patterns

  • Postural and structural changes that increase stress on the lower spine

Two people can both say "I have sciatica" and need completely different strategies.

That's why everybody shouldn't receive exactly the same care. Your spine should determine the strategy, not somebody else's.

There Is a Difference Between Relief and Correction

If you're hurting, I want you feeling better. Of course I do.

But pain isn't always an accurate measure of spinal health, and relief and correction are two different objectives.

Think about a cavity. Did it begin the day the tooth started hurting? Of course not.

The same principle applies to the neuromusculoskeletal system. Forward head posture, abnormal spinal curves and other subluxation patterns can be present long before they finally get your attention through a headache, a tingling hand or a pain down the leg.

That's why, at Elevation Health, we take an objective approach.

What We Look At: Evaluating, Not Guessing

When you come in with headaches, nerve symptoms or sciatica, we don't hand you a generic protocol.

When clinically appropriate, your evaluation may include:

  • A detailed health history: when it started, what it feels like, what makes it better or worse

  • Postural analysis

  • Orthopedic and neurological examination

  • Range-of-motion and functional testing

  • Spinal examination

  • Standing spinal radiographs and digital analysis of spinal alignment, if warranted

Through Chiropractic BioPhysics® (CBP®), we can evaluate how the head, rib cage and pelvis relate to one another and to gravity, and compare what we see to established models of normal spinal alignment.

Now we're not guessing.

We're measuring.

And what gets measured can be remeasured.

How Care May Help

Based on what we find, your personalized plan may include:

  • Corrective adjustments: specific, controlled forces delivered to a specific area, in a specific direction, for a specific reason.

  • Corrective exercise: movements designed to challenge your body's adapted patterns, not reinforce them.

  • Corrective traction: sustained forces to help address abnormal spinal curves and postural displacement. A two-second stretch isn't going to change what your body has adapted to for 10 or 20 years.

  • Soft-tissue work and ergonomic guidance: to reduce the daily strain that keeps triggering symptoms.

Then we reassess. Has your function changed? Have your examination findings changed? Has the pattern improved?

Now we have something meaningful to talk about.

An Honest Word About Results

Chiropractic care isn't a cure-all.

Results vary from person to person. Some headaches and nerve symptoms need medical diagnosis and care. Some conditions need a team approach.

What we promise is a thorough evaluation, an honest assessment of whether we can help, and a plan built around your situation.

And if you have any of the following, please seek medical attention right away rather than waiting for a chiropractic visit:

  • A sudden, severe headache unlike any you've had before

  • Headache with fever, confusion, vision changes or weakness

  • Sudden weakness, numbness on one side of the body or trouble speaking

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs

Don't Wait for the Check-Engine Light

You don't have to wait until your body is screaming before you pay attention to your spine.

We live on our phones. We sit for hours. We work at computers. We get injured. We age. And through all of it, gravity never takes a day off.

If you've been living with headaches, tingling or numbness, or pain that travels down your leg, and you've only thought of chiropractic as "a back thing," it may be time to look at it differently.
