What Is the Webster Technique? How Chiropractic Care Supports a Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings incredible changes to the body. As the baby grows, the pelvis, spine, and surrounding muscles must constantly adapt to support both the mother and the developing child.
At Elevation Health Chiropractic, we regularly support expecting mothers through specialized prenatal chiropractic care. One of the most well-known approaches used during pregnancy is called the Webster Technique.
Despite common misconceptions, the Webster Technique is not a “baby-turning” technique. Instead, it focuses on restoring proper pelvic biomechanics so the body can function more comfortably and efficiently during pregnancy.
Let’s explore what the Webster Technique actually does and why it’s commonly used in prenatal chiropractic care.
Understanding Pelvic Biomechanics During Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the pelvis must remain flexible and balanced to allow for:
Proper fetal positioning
Comfortable movement for the mother
Reduced pressure on nerves and surrounding tissues
Adequate space for the baby to grow and develop
However, hormonal changes—especially increased relaxin levels—cause ligaments to loosen. While this is necessary for childbirth, it can also lead to pelvic instability or misalignment, sometimes resulting in pain or restricted movement.
Research shows that pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain affects nearly half of pregnant women, and it may contribute to discomfort, mobility limitations, and nerve irritation such as sciatica.
What Is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that focuses on the sacrum and pelvis.
The sacrum is the triangular bone at the base of the spine that forms the back of the pelvic structure. When this area becomes restricted or misaligned, it may create tension in surrounding muscles and ligaments.
The goal of the Webster Technique is to:
Improve sacral alignment and mobility
Reduce tension in pelvic ligaments and muscles
Support optimal pelvic function during pregnancy
By improving pelvic biomechanics, chiropractors aim to help create a balanced environment for both mother and baby.
The technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster, founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
More information about the Webster Technique can be found through the organization here: https://icpa4kids.com/webster-technique/
Why Pelvic Balance Matters for Baby Positioning
When the pelvis becomes restricted or imbalanced, it can limit the space available for the baby to move freely in the uterus.
This may contribute to situations where the baby settles into a non-optimal position, such as:
Breech (head up)
Transverse (sideways)
Posterior positioning
While chiropractic care does not directly turn babies, improving pelvic mobility may help create a more balanced environment that allows the baby to move into an ideal position naturally.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association reports that the Webster Technique is designed to reduce intrauterine constraint, which may support better fetal positioning.
Research examining prenatal chiropractic care has also suggested that improved pelvic function may contribute to more comfortable pregnancies and potentially smoother labor experiences. (Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26161624/)
How a Webster Technique Adjustment Works
During a Webster Technique evaluation, a chiropractor assesses pelvic biomechanics and sacral alignment.
At Elevation Health Chiropractic, the process may include:
Postural and pelvic assessment
Gentle motion testing of the sacrum and pelvis
Evaluation of muscle tension and range of motion
One simple test chiropractors often perform involves gently assessing the movement of the legs while the patient lies comfortably on the table. This helps identify whether one side of the pelvis is restricted.
If a restriction is present, a very gentle adjustment may be performed to restore proper movement to the sacrum.
Special pregnancy chiropractic tables allow expecting mothers to lie comfortably on their stomach using adjustable cushions designed to support the growing belly. These tables accommodate women at different stages of pregnancy.
The adjustment itself is light and controlled, often assisted by a specialized chiropractic table designed to reduce the amount of force applied.
Benefits of Prenatal Chiropractic Care
Many expecting mothers seek chiropractic care to support their bodies during pregnancy.
Common reasons include:
Lower back pain
Sciatica
Pelvic discomfort
Hip tightness
Improved mobility during pregnancy
Studies suggest chiropractic care during pregnancy may help reduce musculoskeletal pain and improve quality of life for pregnant women. (Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2647084/)
While every pregnancy is unique, maintaining healthy spinal and pelvic function may help mothers feel more comfortable as their bodies change.
Chiropractic Care as Part of a Healthy Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time when the body undergoes significant structural and hormonal changes. Supporting the spine and pelvis during this process can help reduce stress on the nervous system and improve overall comfort.
At Elevation Health Chiropractic, we believe prenatal care should be proactive, supportive, and tailored to each patient’s needs.
If you’re expecting and experiencing discomfort—or simply want to support your body through pregnancy—prenatal chiropractic care may be a helpful part of your wellness routine.
